Hurricane Irma live: Megastorm just one to two hours away from Florida as residents warned 'the worst is yet to come'

Hurricane Irma is just one or two hours away from hitting Florida as residents are warned 'the worst is yet to come'.

Devastating winds, heavy rain and huge waves will batter the state as it braces itself for its 'most catastrophic storm ever'.

Nearly seven million people have been ordered to leave their homes in the largest evacuation in US history.

The monster storm is packing sustained winds of 125mph, and a storm surge of up to 15ft is expected to inundate entire neighbourhoods. The sea at Miami Beach has dropped 3ft as Irma sucks away the water.

With time running out, hurricane shelters were full or nearing capacity as those who stayed behind look for a safe place to ride out the storm.

Earlier, Irma ripped roofs off homes, caused severe flooding and left thousands without electricity in Cuba.

The death toll currently stands at 27 after Irma tore through the Caribbean including several British Overseas Territories.
