Elderly woman lays in blood after Catalonia riot police storm polling stations and 'fire rubber bullets at voters'

Footage of bloodied voters has emerged from Catalonia with riot police taking to the streets amid a bid to stop the “illegal” independence referendum .

Chaotic scenes have unfolded across the region, with millions of Catalans expected to take to the polls in a vote that could lead to the break up of Spain.

The Catalan Government tweeted saying 38 people have so far been treated by emergency services after “repression by Spanish police".

And rubber bullets have also been fired at people in the streets of Barcelona, according to reports.
